Fighting Scots men's track places third in the nation

Release Date:  May 26, 2007

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- For the first time in school history, Monmouth College is bringing home a team trophy from the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Fighting Scots men accomplished the feat in dramatic fashion Saturday, placing second in the meet's final event, the 4x400, to leapfrog four other teams and place third in the point standings with 28. Previously, Monmouth's highest finish at nationals was sixth at this year's indoor meet.

The team of Dante Daniels, Tyler Rundle and brothers Luke and Josh Reschke ran a season-best time of 3:12.06 to take runner-up honors behind the team from UW-LaCrosse, which won the race in 3:11.01. UW-LaCrosse also took the team title, scoring 99 points. Cortland-SUNY placed second with 34.

Anything short of a second-place finish would have meant the Scots missed out on a trophy, which goes to the top four teams. The margin was razor-thin, as the relay team edged third-place Heidelberg by .35 of a second.

The team trophy was the highlight of another successful day for the Scots, who added three individual All-American finishes to yesterday's total of four. Luke Reschke was one of those individuals, placing sixth in the 400-meter dash in 47.70 for his first All-American honor. He was joined by Jeff Rebholz, who placed sixth in the shot put (52'6-3/4) and Shannon Turczyn, who took seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (15.03). Rebholz repeated his All-American indoor honor in the shot put, while Turczyn has now been an outdoor All-American in the 100-meter hurdles two years in a row.

Friday's All-Americans included national champion pole vaulter Peter Sprecher, as well as Zach Barr (steeplechase), Megan Clennon (high jump) and Jessica White (pole vault).

Two other Fighting Scots competed Saturday but missed out on top eight finishes. Alex Stuart's best triple jump of 46'1-1/2 did not reach the finals, and Jenny Babos did not advance after a top shot put of 39'0-1/2.
