MC’s Terwelp joins 1,000 point club Release Date:
February 6, 2008
MONMOUTH,
Ill. – Monmouth College men’s basketball center Joe Terwelp (Quincy,
Ill./Notre Dame) etched his name in the Fighting Scots record book
and became the 21st member of the men’s 1,000 point club last week.
Terwelp’s milestone came with 15:23 left in the second half against
Beloit Jan. 26. The 6’5 senior’s current total of 1,008 points ranks
him 19th on the Fighting Scots career list, just behind the first
Scot to score 1,000 points – Don Armstrong (’49) from 1945-49. “Joe
is an extremely hard worker,” praised MC coach Mark Vershaw. “He
really put in a lot of work over the semester break and came back in
much better shape so he is able to go longer stretches. In my
opinion, he has got to be one of the best players in the league, if
not THE best.” Terwelp is averaging nearly 16 ppg this season and
carries a career average of just over 13 ppg. At his current pace,
Terwelp could move past Troy Bennett’s (’04) 1,086 points
(1999-2004) and into 14th place by season’s end.
