The Monmouth College men’s golf team put some
unexpected time off to good use last week.
Following their runner-up finish at the Midwest Conference
Championships, coach Dave Ragone’s team’s season came to an early
close, but the 17 members of the Fighting Scots filled that idle
time hosting a free golf clinic for the junior high golf team at
Monmouth's Immaculate Conception School. The college golfers helped
their young counterparts with everything from reading the greens, to
chipping and using the proper grip.
"This is a way our guys can give back to the community they call
home for nine months each year," said Ragone. "We feel it’s
important for our student-athletes to be good role models and
promote the game of golf. Many of our players have come up through
the youth ranks in their hometowns, so they understand how difficult
it can be to learn to play competitively at that age. We’re planning
on making this an annual event."
The clinic, held at Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth, was
attended by 13 youth golfers in grades six through eight on ICS
coach Matt Gillen’s inaugural team.
"Our players really enjoyed having the college players work with
them," he said. "They thought it was nice that the college team
would take time out of their schedules as they prepare for finals to
hold the clinic. They did an outstanding job with our kids. The
one-on-one attention my team received was something they’ll remember
for a long time to come. They especially enjoyed playing a few holes
with their college partner. Coach Ragone has built a very classy
program at Monmouth."
For Ragone’s team, it was just par for the course.
