If the seeds hold, Monmouth College will have three national
champions and 10 All-American athletes in seven of their nine events
at this weekend’s NCAA Division III indoor track national
championships.
The Scots’ best chances for titles at the meet held at Ohio
Northern University in Ada, Ohio, are in the field events where
All-American weight thrower Zach Wilson and pole vaulters Jessica
White and Peter Sprecher have the nation’s top marks. Wilson’s
school-record 62'3-1/4 weight throw leads second-seeded Eric Jones
of conference foe Lawrence University by 1-1/2. He is seeded 11th in
the shot put, but his 52'6-3/4 qualifying mark is less than three
feet behind top-seeded Bobby Riley of UW-La Crosse.
Things get interesting in the men’s and women’s pole vault, where
White and Sprecher face identical challenges. Each is tied for the
top height in the nation with a senior vaulter from North Central
College.
White’s school-record 12'7-1/2 is tied for the nation’s best with
North Central’s Rachel Secrest. Sprecher, the defending outdoor
champion who also holds the Scots’ men’s record vault of 17'1-1/2,
shares the nation’s top mark with Michael Bina of North Central.
Sprecher’s All-American teammate, Jonny Henkins, adds to the
competition in the vault. He could gain All-American status by
matching his qualifying height of 16'7-1/2, which ties him for the
fourth seed nationally.
Monmouth’s 4x400 relay team of Brad Gross, Logan Hohl, Luke
Reschke (who holds All-American honors in the event) and Jacob Stott
appears poised for a top-eight finish to claim All-American honors.
The foursome’s school-record 3:17.39 ranks it fifth, less than one
second behind Nebraska Wesleyan, which posted the nation’s top time.
Reschke’s seed time in the 400 of 48.93 places him sixth in the
event, less than half a second off national leader Chris Wolf of
Nebraska Wesleyan. Hohl is also seeking a spot in the finals of the
55-meter hurdles. He clocked a 7.61 qualifying time for the eighth
seed, just .35 back of top-ranked Jonathan Garcia of
Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Shannon Turczyn rounds out the Scots’
competitors for the weekend. She is seeded 10th in the women’s 55
hurdles with a qualifying time of 8.36. Sumer Rohrs of Frostburg
State logged the top time in the nation at 7.98.
The Scots begin competition Friday with the men’s weight throw,
pole vault finals and prelims in both hurdle events and the
400-meter dash. The finals of the shot put, women’s pole vault,
4x400 relay, 400 and both hurdles events will be held Saturday.
