When Monmouth College reinstated the swimming and diving program in
2004, little did it know that a three-time All-American and future
hall of famer would one day be part of the program.
Assistant coach Al McGuire, who works with the Fighting Scots
divers, will be inducted into the Loras College Hall of Fame during
halftime ceremonies at the Duhawks’ football season opener on Sept.
6. Ironically, the Duhawks’ gridiron opponent will be the Fighting
Scots.
As a collegiate diver at Loras, McGuire qualified seven times for
the NAIA national swim meet and holds every Loras men’s diving
record. Serving as team captain for three years, he also won the
Iowa Small College State Meet in both the 1- and 3-meter
springboards.
"We’re very excited to have Al involved with our program at
Monmouth," said Scots coach Keith Crawford. "He has made a
significant impact already with our program. With his help, we’ve
narrowed the gap in the Midwest Conference, and I’m positive we will
continue to do that with his help."
The men’s team finished less than 200 points behind Grinnell for
the men’s league title in 2008, the Scots’ best finish since the
program was reinstated.
