Lindy's tabs trio as preseason All-Americans

Release Date:  July 17, 2009

MONMOUTH, Ill. Just a month before the Monmouth College football team returns to campus, a trio of returnees have been named First Team Division III Preseason All-Americans by Lindy’s Sports Magazine. It’s the second preseason honor for junior quarterback Alex Tanney (Lexington, Ill./Lexington) and senior offensive linemen Josh Kotecki (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) and Dan Schwindenhammer (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame), who were named preseason All-Americans by Consensus Draft Services in May.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound Kotecki, who was named Second Team All-American last fall by D3football.com, helped anchor an offensive line that allowed Scots quarterbacks to pass for a school-record 3,790 yards.

Schwindenhammer, a 6-foot-3, 260-pounder, was another key cog in Monmouth’s offensive unit that balanced passing with a potent ground game.  Twelve different backs picked up a combined total of more than 2,000 yards and three ran for more than 300 yards each.

Tanney, a strong-armed 6-foot-4, 190-pound signal-caller, shattered nearly every MC season passing record including yardage (3,624) and touchdowns (50). He was ranked eighth nationally with a 166.97 efficiency rating.

The Scots enter the 2009 campaign as the defending Midwest Conference champions and return the majority of the offensive unit that led Division III in scoring with an average of 46.75 points per game. The squad also scored a school-record 50 passing touchdowns and rushed for another 25 scores.

The Scots set or tied 71 team and individual records during the 2008 campaign. The team also had top 10 national rankings in three other offensive categories: fifth in pass efficiency (166.98), seventh in total offense (460.58 ypg) and eighth in passing offense (315.83 ypg).

Monmouth opens the season Sept. 5 on its new home field surface against Loras College.
