Scots lead after 1st Round of MWC Championships Release Date:
May 1, 2009
MONMOUTH, Ill. —
Monmouth
College’s quest for their 11th Midwest Conference men’s golf
championship got off to a good start Thursday.
The Fighting Scots
didn’t let a lengthy rain delay at the start dampen their play as
their 314 leads second place Carroll by four strokes. St. Norbert is
six strokes back and defending team champion Knox is seven strokes
off the pace.
Rodney Clayton
carded a 37-40-77 to lead the Scots at the Aldeen Golf Course in
Rockford, Ill. The sophomore is tied for second with Carroll’s
Michael Riek and Ripon’s Mike Moldenhauer. The trio is two shots
back of the leader, Mark Strain of Illinois College.
Monmouth got two
other scores in the 70s on the soggy course. Ryan Tapscott
checked in with a 40-38-78 to tie for fifth and senior Greg Jones
carded a 39-40-79 and is tied for 10th.
Junior transfer
Ted Starkey is tied for 13th with teammate Ryan Harvey
after a 38-42-80. Harvey was on pace for a round in the 70s, but
found trouble on the back nine to come in with a 37-43-80. Jake
Kilberg sits 36th to round out the Scots with a 42-44-86.
Monmouth began 2nd
round play this morning paired with St. Norbert and Lawrence. The
final round of the 54 event will tee off at 10 a.m. Saturday.
