Scots women lead, men fourth after Day 1

MONMOUTH, Ill. The Monmouth College women got off to a good start in their quest for an eighth straight Midwest Conference track title, the men sit in fourth in their bid for a 10th straight crown.

Bolstered by a 1-2-3 finish in the shot put, the Scots women enter Day 2 Saturday with a 29 point lead over second place Carroll. Monmouth’s men picked up two firsts, but trail first place Grinnell by 19 points.

Gloria Lehr led the strong showing by the women’s throwers, improving her provisional mark in the shot while setting a school and conference record. Her throw of 44’8” put her in first over teammates Tanesha Hughes and Amanda Steeter. Hughes’ toss of 42’11” and Streeter’s mark of 41’8-1/2” were both personal-bests.

In the women’s distance events, Mary Kate Beyer and Katie Staab finished 2-3 in the 5,000. Beyer clocked a time of 18:48.23 and Staab ran a personal-best 18:57.87. Beyer placed fourth in the mile with a time of 5:28.06 and Staab turned in a 5:33.83 to finish eighth.

Monmouth’s two relays placed third. The sprint medley team of Jae Moore, Shannon Turczyn, Morgan Leffel and Amy Aghababian clocked a 4:22.47. Brittany Lowdermilk and Katey Vaccarello joined Moore and Turczyn to clock a 1:48.15.

Heather Hull equaled her personal-best with a high jump of 5’1-1/4” to tie for second. Sarah Stinson’s mark of 4’11-1/2” placed her eighth. Megan McKenna took third in the long jump at 17’6”. Leffel was fifth with a leap of 16’6”.

Turczyn and Vaccarello advanced to Saturday’s finals of the 55-meter hurdles. Turczyn ran an improved time and broke her own conference record with a time of 8.36 to rank her first going into the finals. Moore, Turczyn and Lowermilk advanced to Saturday’s finals in the 55 dash. Moore’s time of 7.47 was just .01 seconds off her personal-best and ranks her third.

On the men’s side, Brock McAnally cleared a personal-best to win the pole vault. His height of 15’0-1/4” was nearly a foot better than his nearest competitor. Ryan Hardman, Tim Bentz, Jake Stott and Luke Reschke teamed for a win in the sprint medley relay. They finished less than a second ahead of runnerup Grinnell by clocking a 3:37.80.

Geoff Bird raced to a seventh place finish in the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:55. Damon Baustista took fifth in the mile, running a 4:30.05.

Logan Hohl advanced to Saturday’s finals in the 55-hurdles. His time of 7.75 ranks him first. Saidu Sesay ran a personal-best 6.58 to lead a trio of Scots qualifiers in the 55-dash. Kyle Prout and Aaron Daverin are ranked just behind their teammate heading into the Saturday finals.

Michael Blodgett took third in the long jump at 21’11-3/4”. Nick Wright placed fifth at 21’6”. A personal-best in the shot put placed Sam Cokinos third. He put the shot 49’4-1/2”. Peyton Lumzy was seventh at 46’8-1/4” and Paul Terpening took ninth with a throw of 44’11-3/4”.

The Midwest Conference Championship at Monmouth College will wrap up Saturday. The field events begin at 10:30 a.m. and the track events start at noon.
