WOMEN
=S SOCCER RECORDS TUMBLE AS SCOTS TROUNCE GREENVILLE

MONMOUTH,IL CThe Monmouth College women=s soccer team enjoyed the most productive match in the four-year history of the program today as the Scots trounced the Greenville Panthers 9-0 at home on Bobby Woll Field. A number of individual and team records were established as the women=s squad ran its season mark to 2-1 with the convincing victory. Prior to the 1997 season, the women had won only three matches in three years of intercollegiate action.

Three goalkeepers combined for the first-ever shutout in Fighting Scot team history. Freshman Trisha Larson (Rockford,IL/East) blanked the Panthers for the first 45 minutes and junior Erin Hook (Vernon Hills,IL/ Woodlands Academy) and freshman Karen Bruno (Itasca,IL/Lake Park) split time in the second half.

The Scots scored a team-record five goals in the first period and quickly established the tempo of the match. Sophomore midfielder Jill Heneghan (Godfrey,IL/Alton) gave Monmouth the only offense it would eventually need on an unassisted goal with only ten minutes gone off the clock. Freshman forward Jessica Adams (Harvard,IL/HS), on her way to the Scots= first individual three-goal game, then took over and put two quick scores on the board within the next ten minutes. Another of Monmouth=s talented freshmen, Bethany Bresley (Mundelein,IL/HS), tallied her first goal of the season in the 25th minute and junior striker Jennifer McKee (Stockton,IL/HS) closed out the Scots= record half by converting a rebound miss by junior Laura Haiduke (Roselle,IL/Lake Park) in the 43rd minute.

Cindy Larson (Gladstone,IL/Union) and Anna Schlemmer (Florissant,MO/Hazelwood Central) also recorded their first individual goals of the season to continue the scoring barrage in the second half. Larson connected on an assist from Adams at 47:05 and Schlemmer put a nice assist pass from Heneghan into the nets at 53:54 to give the Scots a 7-0 lead. Adams completed her hat trick with another unassisted goal in the 68th minute and Haiduke finished off the record rout with Monmouth=s ninth goal of the day with 18 minutes left in the contest.

AWe were able to substitute players freely throughout the match,@ said Fighting Scots coach Simon Cordery. AThe women played a good, solid game against a young and inexperienced Greenville team. It was very nice to get some of our younger players into the match.@

In addition to the five first-half scores and Adams= three individual goals, the Fighting Scots established new standards for most goals in a match (9) and most shots in a single match (50). The seven different players scoring goals also set a new team record. Adams has now tallied five goals in her first three matches and has already tied the Scots= single-season total set by current Monmouth junior Tisha Kimoto in 1996.

The women get two days of rest before returning to Midwest Conference action. The Scots play host to Beloit College of the MWC North Division at Bobby Woll Field on Saturday afternoon and hope to improve upon last year=s 1-1 tie with the Buccaneers. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 PM with the men=s Monmouth-Beloit match to follow.
