WOMEN
=S SOCCER DOMINATES AGAINST BELOIT

MONMOUTH,IL CThe Monmouth College women=s soccer team posted its second consecutive home shutout of the season Saturday as the Scots defeated the Beloit Buccaneers 3-0 on Bobby Woll Field. The win improves the team=s season record to 3-1 and the Scots now stand 2-1 in Midwest Conference action. The women=s team has already won as many matches in 1997 as it had in its previous three years of intercollegiate action.

Sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Shaughnessy (Springfield,IL/Ursuline) defended the nets for Monmouth, which had blanked Greenville College 9-0 earlier in the week. The shutout was Shaughnessy
=s first at Monmouth and the Scots= first-ever shutout of a Midwest Conference opponent. The two teams had played to a 1-1 tie last year in Beloit but Monmouth quickly established the tempo of the match on Saturday. Two women tallied their first goals of the season as the Scots= improved offensive attack continues to share the scoring honors.

Tisha Kimoto (Aurora,IL/Waubonsie Valley), the program
=s career goal leader, recorded her first 1997 score as the junior forward converted an assist pass from freshman Kimberly Morris (Crystal Lake,IL/Central) at 12:49 of the first half to give the Scots an early lead. Sophomore Jill Heneghan (Godfrey,IL/Alton) doubled Monmouth=s advantage on an unassisted shot in the 28th minute and the Scots enjoyed a 2-0 halftime lead. Morris and Heneghan combined for the only score of the second period when Morris beat the Buccaneer goalie and found the back of the net at the 71:53 mark. It was the freshman=s first goal and marked the tenth different player to have scored this season for Monmouth.

The Scots were able to keep the game primarily in the Bucs
= half of the field throughout the contest and took advantage of Beloit=s inability to clear the ball out of its= own end. AWe played a fine match against a well-organized, disciplined Beloit team,@ said Monmouth coach Simon Cordery. AThe difference was our ability to keep the ball in their half. By maintaining the pressure we managed to keep Beloit off balance.@

The women resume their Midwest Conference schedule on the road next week as the Scots travel to Grinnell on Wednesday to face the defending MWC league champion Pioneers. The match is set to start at 4:00 on the Grinnell College campus. The team will then travel north for a MWC weekend doubleheader against Ripon and Carroll on Saturday and Sunday.
