MC SOCCER TEAMS BLANKED ON THE ROAD

MONMOUTH,IL -- The Monmouth soccer teams found the road a tough play to play on Wednesday as both Fighting Scot squads were shut out. The men lost a non-conference match to Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington by a 3-0 score while the women dropped a 2-0 Midwest Conference decision at Grinnell College.

The men=s record fell to 2-3 on the season as the Scots were frustrated by an inability to find the nets. Monmouth managed 18 shots to Wesleyan=s 22 and had several close shots knocked out of the goal by Titan defenders. Senior keeper Jeff Sutton (Alton,IL/HS) played the entire match in goal for Monmouth and was credited with seven saves. Wesleyan connected in the 20th minute for their first score and then extended their advantage with two second-half goals as Monmouth=s offensive attacks stalled in the IWU half of the field.

AWe outplayed them but just couldn=t put any balls in the net,@ said Monmouth coach Rue Carthew. AOur inability to score is hurting us. We had several shots stopped right at the goal line.@

The women=s match was much the same story as the Scots put pressure on Grinnell but could not convert any goals against the defending MWC South Division champions. The Pioneers, who finished second in last year=s MWC tournament, scored once in each half for the victory. The Scots defense, which had played flawlessly in two home shutouts last week, allowed their first goal in over 200 minutes of action midway through the first period and a Grinnell forward connected on another shot with just over 10 minutes left on the clock to seal the win.

Sophomore Colleen Shaughnessy (Springfield,IL/Ursuline) stopped 13 Pioneer shots on goal as Grinnell outshot the Scots by a 21-12 margin. AWe played hard against a difficult opponent, but in the first half could not build any lasting pressure,@ said Scots coach Simon Cordery. AIn the second half we increased our pressure but still could not score.@ The women=s team record now stands at 3-2 (season) and 2-2 (conference).

The soccer teams will travel together this weekend for an important Midwest Conference doubleheader as both squads face off against the same MWC North schools. Monmouth will play two matches at Ripon on Saturday and a pair at Carroll on Sunday.
