MONMOUTH WOMEN
=S SOCCER STAYS IN MWC RACE
MONMOUTH,IL
CThe Monmouth College women=s soccer team continued its breakthrough season with another road victory on Saturday and in the process stayed in the thick of the Midwest Conference race for a postseason tournament berth. The victims this time were the Illinois College Lady Blues as the Scots posted a dominating 3-0 win. The shutout was the team=s third this year and improves the women=s soccer season record to 5-3. Monmouth=s conference mark of 4-3 keeps the Scots in contention for one of the four tournament spots with only two more MWC matches on the fall schedule.
Sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Shaughnessy (Springfield.IL/Ursuline) had no trouble defending the nets for Monmouth. Shaughnessy recorded her second individual shutout of the year and only touched the ball once during the entire match as the Scots kept the ball on the Illinois side for most of the contest.
Illinois attempted to plug the middle of the field which forced the Monmouth game to the outside. However, the Scots were able to make the proper adjustments and struck for two first-half scores. Junior forward Tisha Kimoto (Aurora,IL/Waubonsie Valley) tallied both goals, her second and third of the season. Kimoto converted a midfield assist pass from freshman Jessica Adams (Harvard,IL/HS) ten minutes into the contest and then sent a free kick attempt past the IC goalie at the 29:10 mark for a 2-0 Monmouth advantage. Monmouth=s freshman class continues to sparkle and combined for the Scots= lone second-period goal. Rookie midfielder Kimberly Morris (Crystal Lake,IL/Central) took a pass from classmate Bethany Bresley (Mundelein,IL/HS) in the 80th minute and connected on her second individual score to complete the Scots= scoring.
AWe kept the ball in their half of the field the entire match but could not create enough clear-cut chances to cause many problems,@ said Monmouth coach Simon Cordery. AOur three goals, however, were very well taken. Overall it was a good team performance and a great result to carry us into the second half of the season.@
Three non-conference matches await the women next week before they face their next MWC opponent. The Scots travel to Rock Island on Tuesday to face the Augustana Vikings and then play host to Blackburn and Maryville next weekend. The Augustana match is set to start at 2:30 PM and will be the first match of a men=s and women=s doubleheader between the two schools.
