WOMEN=S SOCCER SHUTS OUT GREENVILLE TO HIGHLIGHT FIGHTING SCOTS WEEKEND ACTION

The Monmouth College women=s soccer team kicked its way to their first victory of the season with a 3-0 road shutout of Greenville to highlight a full weekend of Fighting Scot sports action. It was the second straight shutout in the series for the Scots (1-1 season), who blanked the Panthers 9-0 last fall in Monmouth. Coach Simon Cordery=s squad rebounded from a loss at Dominican last week with a dominating midfield performance. AOur midfielders controlled the flow of the match and gave the forwards many scoring chances,@ said Cordery. AThere are still areas of concern for us, but overall it was a fine performance by a team only slowly reaching its potential.@ Sophomore Jessica Adams (Harvard,IL/HS) tallied her first goal of the season on a rebound shot midway through the first half to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Freshman Jennifer Roth (East Peoria,IL/HS) converted an Adams assist into a second Monmouth goal with just under three minutes left in the half. Co-captains Tisha Kimoto (Pittsfield,NY/ Waubonsie Valley [IL] HS) and Jill Heneghan (Godfrey, IL/Alton) combined for the lone goal of the second period with Kimoto scoring her second goal of the season with 33 minutes showing on the clock.

The Monmouth men played to a 1-1 draw with Central College in soccer action on Sunday at Bobby Woll Field. Neither team could dent the nets in the first half but Central scored 16 minutes into the second period to take a brief 1-0 lead. Monmouth responded quickly, tying the match two minutes later on a goal by freshman Justin Wheeler (Charleston,IL/HS). Wheeler converted a throw-in pass from junior Matthew Carl (Aurora,IL/ Waubonsie Valley) for his first goal of the season. Despite maintaining superior field position for most of the match, Monmouth (2-1-1) could not convert on several scoring opportunities and the match ended in a tie.

The Fighting Scots went 2-1 in three women=s volleyball matches at the Augustana Tournament on Saturday. Monmouth finished in third place of six schools. The Scots dropped their first contest to the host Vikings (14-16, 9-12, 12-15) but bounced back to defeat Eureka in three straight games (15-9, 18-16, 15-9). MC finished its day by beating former Midwest Conference rival Cornell by game scores of 15-5, 15-2, 6-15,and 15-11. AWe played fairly well overall,@ said Scots coach Kari Shimmin. AWe should have grabbed at least one game against Augustana in what was a very close match. The team is still finding out its real potential.@

The cross country teams raced in Peoria last Friday night at the Bradley University Open against a tough field of Division I schools. Sophomore Tony Miles (Moline,IL/HS) paced the men with a 33rd-place effort of 27:43 on the 8000-meter layout at Detweiller Park. Juniors Ann Moody (Yates City,IL/Farmington) and Dara Pagel (Lincoln,IL/HS) ran 21:26 (89th) and 21:35 (93rd) in the women=s 5000-meter race as four Fighting Scot runners finished within 59 seconds. AThe individual times were a bit slower than we would have liked but each group did a fine job of keeping the pack tight throughout the race in a fairly big meet,@ said Monmouth coach Chris Pio. AOur split times were very good, so the challenge now is to bring everyone down in time together as a group.@ The harriers will continue their season next Saturday as they travel to the UW-Parkside Midwest Collegiate Invitational in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
