WOMEN’S SOCCER DEFEATS FONTBONNE, HOST IC ON TUESDAY
Monmouth,IL – The Monmouth women’s soccer team prepped for their next Midwest Conference match by defeating Fontbonne College by a 4-2 score at Bobby Woll Field on Sunday. The victory pushes the Scots one game over the .500 mark again for the season with a 5-4 record. The women will host MWC rival Illinois College in a league showdown at Woll Field on Tuesday afternoon, looking to improve on their 1-2 conference mark.
The Scots received one of their best overall team performances of the year to date against Fontbonne. Four different players tallied goals and coach Simon Cordery was able to get quality minutes from many of his reserve players to keep the Griffins at bay. "This was a fine overall performance by our team," siad Cordery. "The bench really played a crucial role in keeping us motivated and gave the starters a rest. We worked hard as a team and that was the difference in the match."
Junior co-captain Jill Heneghan (Godfrey,IL/Alton) jumpstarted the Monmouth offense early, breaking a scoreless match with her first goal of the season only three minutes into the first period. Senior Tisha Kimoto (Pittsford, NY/Waubonsie Valley [IL] HS) was credited with the assist. Freshman midfielder Jennifer Northway (St. Louis,MO/McCluer) extended the Monmouth lead two minutes later, netting her second score of the season on an unassisted goal.
Sophomore Bethany Bresley (Mundelein,IL/HS) also broke into the scoring column against Fontbonne, making the score 3-0 with 20 minutes left in the first half. Bresley converted an assist pass from freshman Jennifer Roth (East Peoria,IL/HS) for her first individual goal.
Kimoto finished off the Scots’ scoring with a goal in the 69th minute off a dual assist from freshman Dana Stunkard (Madison,WI/James Madison) and sophomore Kim Morris (Crystal Lake,IL/ Central). The goal was Kimoto’s 7th of the season and pushed her team-leading point total to 16 (7 goals, 2 assists). Fighting Scot goalie Colleen Shaughnessy (Springfield,IL/Ursuline Academy) played the first half and left with two saves and the three-goal cushion. Shaughnessy was relieved by sophomore keeper Trisha Larson (Rockford,IL/East), who surrendered two late Fontbonne goals.
Monmouth hosts IC in a critical MWC matchup at 3:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon before traveling to Beloit and Lake Forest this weekend.
