FIGHTING SCOTS SHUT OUT IC IN WOMEN’S SOCCER
Monmouth,IL – The Monmouth women’s soccer team evened their Midwest Conference record and moved into early contention for a postseason tournament berth by defeating Illinois College 2-0 Tuesday afternoon at Bobby Woll Field. The victory improved the Scots to 6-4 on the season and 2-2 in MWC matches and was the team’s third shutout of the fall campaign.
The Scots jumped out to a quick two-goal advantage and then used a solid defensive performance to squash the Lady Blues. "We managed to begin quickly and sustained our attacks, firing off 24 shots," said Monmouth coach Simon Cordery. "Our fast start was crucial. IC played hard and their defense held extremely well, particularly their goalkeeper who played an outstanding match. "
Monmouth outshot Illinois by a lopsided 24-2 margin but could only manage two scores, thanks to 13 saves by IC goalie Jill Angle. The Fighting Scots’ offense, however, connected on their first and third shots of the match to set the tone for the entire contest. Senior co-captain Tisha Kimoto (Pittsford,NY/Waubonsie Valley [IL] HS) scored her team-leading 8th goal of the season with only 1:08 elapsed off the game clock. Junior Jill Heneghan (Godfrey,IL/Alton) and senior Malinda Springer (Woodstock,IL/HS) each received credit for an assist on a combination play which ended with Kimoto converting an excellent pass for the first MC score.
Sophomore Anna Schlemmer (Florissant,MO/Hazelwood Central) tallied her second goal less than five minutes later to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Scots. Schlemmer was able to knock home the ball following a mad scramble in front of the Illinois goal and her goal proved to be the last of the match. Both of Monmouth’s goalkeepers saw action in the match as junior Colleen Shaughnessy (Springfield,IL/Ursuline Academy) played the first half before being relieved by sophomore Trisha Larson (Rockford,IL/East). Larson recorded the only save of the match for Monmouth.
The Scots next travel north to take on MWC rivals Beloit and Lake Forest this weekend in a critical Saturday-Sunday doubleheader. Beloit is 1-3-2 in conference play while Lake Forest (4-1) is one of the teams the Scots are chasing for a tournament berth.
