FIGHTING SCOTS SPLIT WOMEN’S SOCCER DOUBLEHEADER
Monmouth,IL – Monmouth found itself on both ends of 2-0 decisions this weekend in women’s soccer as the Fighting Scots split a pair of Midwest Conference road matches. Monmouth defeated Beloit on Saturday but dropped Sunday’s match at Lake Forest to stay at .500 (3-3) in the conference. The Scots’ season record now stands at 7-5.
Goalies Colleen Shaughnessy (Springfield,IL/Ursuline Academy) and Trisha Larson (Rockford,IL/East) shared the shut out Saturday against Beloit. Shaughnessy earned one save and Larson two as the Buccaneers only managed five shots on goal. Monmouth posted 24 shots and scored twice late in the first half for the only goals of the match. Junior Jill Heneghan (Godfrey,IL/Alton) converted an assist pass from senior Tisha Kimoto (Pittsford, NY/Waubonsie Valley [IL] HS) for the Scots’ first score in the 32nd minute and Kimoto rang up her team-leading ninth goal of the season ten minutes later to double the Monmouth advantage. Heneghan and sophomore Jessica Adams (Harvard,IL/HS) teamed up for the assist.
The Monmouth defense played well on Sunday against Lake Forest but the offense could not get on track. Shaughnessy recorded 17 saves in goal for Monmouth and kept the team in the match. LFC outshot Monmouth 28-4 and controlled every aspect of the match. The Foresters scored once in each period to claim their sixth win in seven MWC matches.
"The Beloit match was a good win against a tenacious team," said Monmouth head coach Simon Cordery. "We maintained possession of the ball and generally did a fine job of controlling the flow of the match. At Lake Forest we encountered a fast, physical, skillful team which basically outplayed us for great stretches. Outstanding goalkeeping and an overall team defensive effort kept us in the match but we could not generate a sustained attack on offense."
Monmouth will travel north again next weekend for another Midwest Conference doubleheader. The Scots play at Lawrence University on Saturday (1:00 kickoff) and then travel to St. Norbert on Sunday (11:00 AM start). Both opponents are ahead of Monmouth in the league standings at 4-1.
