NORTH DIVISION TEAMS SWEEP FIGHTING SCOTS WOMEN’S SOCCER

Needing at least one win to stay in contention for a Midwest Conference postseason tournament berth, the Monmouth women’s soccer team traveled north to Wisconsin this past weekend with high hopes but returned with two disappointing losses. Monmouth was defeated by Lawrence 2-0 on Saturday and then dropped a 3-1 decision at St. Norbert on Sunday. The two losses drop the Scots to 7-7 on the season and 3-5 in conference matches. Both Lawrence and St. Norbert clinched postseason spots and will be joined in the league tournament by Carroll and Lake Forest later this month.
Monmouth ran into a tough defense Saturday in Appleton as the host Vikings shut down the Scots offensive attacks. LU scored early on an uncontested shot in the goal box three minutes into match. The goal stood as the only score until fifteen minutes remained in the match when Lawrence again found the back of the Monmouth net. Junior goalie Colleen Shaughnessy (Springfield,IL/Ursuline Academy) played the entire 90 minutes for Monmouth and was credited with six saves as Lawrence outshot Monmouth 14-12.
Sunday’s match against St. Norbert was scoreless at halftime as both teams traded offensive runs but could not finish. The Green Knights scored the first goal five minutes into the second period but MC responded with the equalizer. Sophomore Jessica Adams (Harvard,IL/ HS) converted an indirect kick from junior Julie Kahl (Crystal Lake,IL/Central) into the Scots’ only goal of the weekend. Adams tipped a pass from Tisha Kimoto (Pittsford,NY/Waubonsie Valley [IL] HS) following Kahl’s kick for her fifth goal of the season. It was Kimoto’s fifth assist and Kahl’s second of the year.
Norbert broke the tie with eight minutes remaining on the clock on a rebound of a shot attempt which deflected off of Scot goalie Tisha Larson (Rockford,IL/ East) in front of the net. The Knights added a third score on a breakaway run with 37 seconds left in the match for the final margin of victory. Larson was credited with seven saves in goal as the Scots again were outshot for the match 24-10.

Monmouth concludes its fall season with two home matches this week. Illinois Wesleyan comes to town for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday and the Scots entertain arch-rival Knox next Saturday in their final MWC match. The Knox match will also serve as Senior Recognition Day.
