MEN’S SOCCER DRAWS FINAL MATCH

MONMOUTH, IL -- The Monmouth men’s soccer team ended a frustrating fall season with a 2-2 tie on its home field against Marycrest International University on Tuesday afternoon. The non-conference draw leaves the Fighting Scots’ final season record at 3-10-3. Monmouth wrapped up Midwest Conference action last Saturday with a 1-7-1 league mark.

Poor field conditions due to recent heavy rains dictated the tempo of play for the entire match. Marycrest was able to score the only goal of the first half at the 18-minute mark and carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. Monmouth responded five minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal by sophomore Craig Hanson (Galesburg,IL/Galesburg), his first of the season.

The tie was short-lived as the Marycrest offense scored again two minutes later. Freshman goalie Joel Cowan (Alton,IL/Alton) gave up both scores but was also credited with six saves in the nets for the Scots. Hanson proved the first goal was no fluke as the sophomore midfielder promptly drilled another ball past the Marycrest goalkeeper in the 65th minute to knot the score once again. Neither team could put together an offensive run for the remainder of the match and, facing darkening skies and threatening weather conditions, the match was declared a draw.
