Monmouth at Carroll, Waukesha, Wis.
Carroll 4, Monmouth 0 (Record: 3-11-3, 1-7-1 in MWC)
Another slow start doomed the Fighting Scots, as
the playoff-qualifying Pioneers found the back of the net 1:21 into the
game. They would add three more scores before the game was 22 minutes
old, with the final one coming on a penalty kick. Senior Trevor Neff,
playing in his final game for Monmouth, had one of the Scots' 10 shots.
Monmouth at Ripon, Ripon, Wis.
Ripon 5, Monmouth 1 (Record: 3-10-3, 1-6-1 in MWC)
For 76 minutes, the Fighting Scots looked like the
stronger team, but a slow start and a rough finish allowed the Red Hawks
to emerge with a victory that wasn't as easy as the final score
indicated. The Hawks came out firing, catching the Scots on their heels
with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes. But Monmouth recovered
almost immediately, as Chris Anderson cut the deficit in half
just 2:35 later. From there, the Scots had more shots, racking up a 7-1
edge through a portion of the second half. Inside 10 minutes to go,
coach George Perry pushed more players into the Monmouth attack
to try to get the equalizer, but Ripon took advantage, scoring three
times in the final 6:39.
Monmouth vs. Lake Forest,
Monmouth, Ill.
Lake Forest 2, Monmouth 1 (Record: 3-9-3, 1-5-1 in MWC)
For the third straight game, the Fighting Scots
fell by the same score. The Foresters' Ben Levy scored in the game's
eighth minute and then again in the 105th to lift the visitors to the
win. After Levy's early goal, the Scots had the better of the first half
play, firing eight shots. It wasn't until the second half, though, that
one connected as Pat Blazer got the equalizer in the 66th minute,
with assists going to Jeremy Doze and Danny Davis.
Monmouth forced the Foresters to make one save in the first 10-minute
overtime before Levy notched the game-winner with 5:26 left in the
second OT. The Scots outshot LFC 18-17 in the game.
Monmouth vs. Beloit,
Monmouth, Ill.
Beloit 2, Monmouth 1 (Record: 3-8-3, 1-4-1 in MWC)
The difference in the Fighting Scots' evenly
played match with Beloit was a breakaway goal with 30 minutes left in
the second half. Will Swendson got behind Monmouth's back line and, with
a defender right on his heels, beat goalkeeper Owen Robinson from
12 yards out. Swendson assisted the Bucs' first score, which came six
minutes into the game. The Scots replied 30 minutes later on a great
individual play by defender Bryan Jackson. He moved up from the
back, beat two Beloit defenders off the dribble and blasted a long shot
that curved into the net off the far post for his first collegiate goal.
The score remained tied for the next 25 minutes, and that was fitting,
as the Bucs held a slim 20-19 edge in shots for the game. Danny Davis
led the Scots in that department with four, and Robinson finished with
nine saves.
Monmouth at Millikin,
Decatur, Ill.
Millikin 2, Monmouth 1 (Record: 3-7-3)
Lately, the hard part for the Fighting Scots has
been scoring goals. Monmouth fixed that problem very early against the
Big Blue, as Danny Davis scored 4:27 into the game on a goal
assisted by Trevor Neff and Lucas Knox. Millikin tied the score
shortly before halftime and then netted the game-winner on a penalty kick that was awarded
on a handball call in the 65th minute. Millikin outshot Monmouth 20-11 for the game,
including 11-3 in the second half.
Monmouth at Illinois College,
Jacksonville, Ill.
Monmouth 0, IC 0 2OT (Record: 3-6-3, 1-3-1 in MWC)
For the second time this season, the Fighting
Scots battled to a scoreless tie. The draw marked Monmouth's fourth
straight game without a goal, but it was not for a lack of effort. The
Scots fired 14 shots, including four during the two overtime periods.
Patrick Blazer led the team with five shots. The Blueboys mounted an
attack as well, shooting 16 times, and they also had 11 corner kicks,
including six in the 20 minutes of extra time. Defensively, it was
Monmouth's fourth shutout of the year.
Monmouth at Grinnell, Grinnell, Iowa
Grinnell 4, Monmouth 0 (Record: 3-6-2, 1-3 in MWC)
This time around, the first 33 minutes were a
problem for the Fighting Scots. When the teams met on their originally
scheduled date of Sept. 18, Monmouth had kept Grinnell off the
scoreboard when the game was halted by lightning after 33:18 had been
played. In the make-up, though, the Pioneers struck three times in that
span, scoring in the 14th and 27th minutes and adding their final
first-half tally 33:01 into the contest. The Pioneers, who outshot the
Scots 19-11, tacked on their last score with 7:16 remaining in the
second half.
Monmouth vs. Lawrence, Monmouth,
Ill.
Lawrence 3, Monmouth 0 (Record: 3-5-2, 1-2 in MWC)
Much like a first-pitch, leadoff home run got the
Chicago Cubs off to a bad start in their playoff-ending loss to Arizona
the night before, the Fighting Scots found themselves behind the vising
Vikings almost immediately. Lawrence scored 58 seconds into the match,
and the rest of the first half didn't go much better. A cross led to an
own goal in the 21st minute, and a beautiful through pass was converted
into a goal 14 minutes later to close the game's scoring. Owen Robinson
made nine saves to prevent further damage, but Monmouth's offense was
only able to generate six shots, compared to 19 by Lawrence.
Monmouth vs. St. Norbert, Monmouth, Ill.
St. Norbert 2,
Monmouth 0 (Record: 3-4-2, 1-1 in MWC)
The Fighting Scots saw their Midwest Conference
record slip back to .500 after they simply couldn't generate enough
scoring chances against a tough Green Knight team. The best opportunity
for the Scots, who were outshot 20-4, came in the second half when a
well-struck ball from outside the penalty box caromed off the crossbar.
That would have breathed new life into the Scots, who finally
surrendered a goal in the game when Donny Baloun scored in the 62nd
minute off an assist from Mike Burmesch. The Knights' other goal, which
came with eight minutes left in the game, was also assisted by Burmesch.
Sebi Buyukaslan tallied the goal, his team-high fourth of the year, as
St. Norbert improved to 4-0 in the MWC.
Monmouth at Knox, Galesburg, Ill.
Monmouth 1, Knox 0 (Record: 3-3-2, 1-0 in MWC)
Trevor Neff's goal with 7:09 left in the
first half stood up
as the game-winner as the Fighting Scots won their conference opener.
After Joe Howell's long shot hit the crossbar, it bounced back 15 yards to
Neff, who buried a perfect first-touch strike into the back of the net.
Owen Robinson made five saves as he posted his third shutout of
the year.
Monmouth vs. Loras, Monmouth, Ill.
Loras 4,
Monmouth 0 (Record: 2-3-2)
The Fighting Scots ran into a talented undefeated
squad who used three pretty second-half goals to post a convincing
victory. The Duhawks' first goal, which was the only score before
halftime, could be considered a bit of a fluke, as Santiago Mejia's shot
deflected off a defender, leaving goalkeeper Owen Robinson
helpless and snapping the Scots' shutout string, which dated back to
Sept. 15. However, Loras remained continually on the attack in the
second half, and the Duhawks netted goals on two crosses to runners in
the middle and a world-class 17-yard blast that went in just under the
crossbar. Loras held a 10-3 shot advantage in the second half and outshot Monmouth 24-7 for the game as it improved to 8-0-1 on the year.
Monmouth vs. Cornell, Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 3, Cornell 0 (Record: 2-2-2)
The Fighting Scots scored for the first time since
Labor Day and never looked back en route to continuing an impressive
scoreless streak of their own. Counting a suspended game vs. Grinnell,
Monmouth has now gone the last 322:28 without allowing a goal. While the
match was still scoreless, goalkeeper Owen Robinson stretched all
of his 6-foot-1 frame toward his goal-line to corral a Ram shot that was
rolling to the far post. In the second half, with the Scots comfortably
in front 2-0, Robinson came far off his line to deny a breakaway
attempt. Offensively, the heroes included Trevor Neff, who headed
in a cross, and Danny Davis, who made it a 2-0 game in the 51st
minute. Joe Howell added his first collegiate goal with seven
minutes remaining, with the assist going to Bryan Jackson.
Monmouth at Coe, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Monmouth 0, Coe 0 2 OT (Record: 1-2-2)
Goalkeeper Owen Robinson was the star of a
scoreless tie against the Kohawks. On at least three occasions, the
sophomore robbed Coe of what would have been the winning score. Robinson
wound up with 10 saves for the match, including three in the two
overtime periods. Monmouth was outshot 20-7, putting four of those on
goal. The shutout pushed the Scots' goals-allowed average to less than
1.00 for the year, as Monmouth has surrendered just four scores through
five matches.
Monmouth vs. Central, Monmouth, Ill.
Central 2,
Monmouth 0 (Record: 1-2-1)
It shows up as a defeat in the boxscore, but
Monmouth showed the progress it has made, especially on the defensive
end, holding the visiting Dutch scoreless for a half before falling by
two. Last year, Central recorded a 5-0 victory. Owen
Robinson's point-blank save in the first half was a highlight for
Monmouth, as were several defensive stops by defender Bryan Jackson.
Central finally broke through shortly after halftime on a deep ball down
the middle, which was converted into a goal by Brett McKenzie. Teammate
Cruz Herr added the clincher 14 minutes later for the Dutch, who outshot
the Scots 23-1.
Monmouth vs. Dubuque, Monmouth, Ill.
Dubuque 1,
Monmouth 0 (Record: 1-1-1)
In a match that was played predominantly in the
midfield, the Fighting Scots and Spartans combined for just 19 shots on
goal. Each team shot four times during a scoreless first half, but the
pace quickened some in the second half. Dubuque was finally able to
capitalize with 10:30 to play, as Cody Self scored off a Chad Newquist
assist. The Scots were not able to counter and suffered their first
setback of the season. Monmouth goalkeeper Owen Robinson and his
Dubuque counterpart combined for just four saves.
Monmouth vs. Mt. Mercy, Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 1, Mt. Mercy 1 2OT (Record: 1-0-1)
Danny Davis' goal that bounced off the post
and the Mt. Mercy keeper tied the contest with 10:15 remaining, and the
Fighting Scots were able to hang on for the tie despite being outshot
23-11. The Mustangs' Bryan Jahava scored in the match's 71st minute on a
nice individual move in the penalty box, with his shot bouncing in off
the far post past a diving Owen Robinson. Both teams felt the
effects of the 90-degree weather in the two periods of extra time,
generating just four shots, all by the Mustangs. Leading the Scots'
strong defensive effort was Bryan Jackson, who stopped several
strong Mt. Mercy chances, including a goalbound shot when Robinson was
well off his line. Jackson also assisted on Davis' goal, and Robinson
had 11 saves.
Monmouth vs. Eureka, Monmouth, Ill.
Monmouth 4, Eureka 0
The Fighting Scots got their season off to a great
start, posting their highest goal total since late in the 2005 campaign.
Trevor Neff opened the scoring in the 19th minute, running on
to a Jeremy Doze cross and knocking it in to the near post. That
stood up as the lone first half goal, but Monmouth was able to cash in
often in the second stanza on a series of pretty plays. The first came
when Neff was sent in on a breakaway on a great through pass from Brondos and scored his second goal. Just two minutes later, Danny
Davis hit a 20-yard blast over Eureka goalkeeper Garin Pisano, and
Monmouth's final score came with 20:24 to play when a hustling Joey
Schwinger found Brondos open in front of the net. For the game, the
Scots held a 27-0 shot advantage, with goalie Owen Robinson
posting his first collegiate shutout. Josh Graeber and Adam
Buol also cracked the assist column for the Scots. |
