MONMOUTH VOLLEYBALL OUTLASTS EUREKA IN FIVE
Monmouth,IL -- The Monmouth College women’s volleyball team improved its 1998 dual-match record to 7-2 with an exciting, come-from-behind win at Eureka on Tuesday night. The Fighting Scots took the non-conference match three games to two after falling behind early. It was Monmouth’s second match victory over the Red Devils this season, having defeated Eureka in the Monmouth Invitational on September 5th.
First-year coach Kari Shimmin again received a balanced effort from her squad, which won by scores of 14-16, 15-8, 7-15, 15-7 and 15-4. "We had to play catch-up in the first and fourth games," said Shimmin. "In the fifth game, our communication was very good and our defense dominated. It gave us all the momentum to win the match."
Freshman middle hitter Jaime Jones (LaHarpe,IL/LaHarpe) led the Scots’ frontline attack with 16 kills and also added 14 blocks. Sophomore Cathie Osborn (Hartsburg,IL/Hartsburg-Emden) was also in double-digit kills with 10 and was one of three players with a team-high 21 digs. Setters Cindy Erlandson (Kirkwood,IL/Yorkwood) (16) and Stacey Kreps (Champaign,IL/ Centennial) (7) combined for 23 assists in the match. Wendy Erlandson (Kirkwood,IL/ Yorkwood) added 17 blocks to the Monmouth effort at the net.
The Scots will entertain Midwest Conference South Division rival Lake Forest this Friday at Glennie Gymnasium in their MWC league opener. Starting time is set for 7:30 PM.
