Bomb Threat
There are only two reasonable explanations for a call reporting that
there is a bomb in a particular location:
-
The caller has knowledge or
believes that an explosive device has been placed in the location and
he/she wants to minimize personal injury or property damage.
-
The caller wants to create an
atmosphere of anxiety and panic to disrupt normal activities.
The vast majority of bomb threats turn out to be a hoax; however, it is
practically impossible to determine immediately whether the threat is
real or a hoax.

When a bomb threat is called
in, use the bomb threat checklist above and keep the following in mind:
-
The receiver of the call
should keep the caller on the line as long as possible. Ask him/her
to repeat the message. Record on paper every word spoken by the
person.
-
Use the Bomb Treat
Checklist located on the next page. If the caller does not indicate
the location of the bomb or the time of possible detonation, ask the
caller for this information.
-
Inform the caller that the
building/area is occupied and detonation of a bomb could result in
death or serious injury to many innocent people.
-
Pay particular attention to
peculiar background noises such as, motors running, background
music, and any other noise, which may give a clue as to the location
of the caller.
-
Listen closely to the voice
(male, female) and voice quality (calm, excited). Report this
information immediately to the Dean On-Call at 309-337-5713, and
complete the Bomb Threat Checklist.
-
Based on the situation,
evacuation of the building may be warranted. The Monmouth Police
Department will assist in searching Monmouth College buildings.
Employees should report the location of any suspicious objects to
Campus Security or the Dean On-Call. DO NOT TOUCH THE OBJECT! Do not
open drawers, cabinets, or turn lights on or off.
-
Upon receipt of the call,
the Dean On-Call will notify the Monmouth Police Department of any
bomb threats and convene the other members of the Crisis Response
Team
-
Do not interrupt the caller.
