How To Survive Exam Week

Expect some tension during exam weeks. Below are some steps to help you deal with that tension and survive exam week.

bulletTake time to relax. To cope with tension before and between exams, take time to rest, exercise, perform relaxation exercises, or go for a walk.

bulletAdopt a positive approach. Try to view the exams as a way for you to demonstrate what you have learned in the class not as a way for the professor to torture you.

bulletAnxiety is contagious just like a cold. Avoid people who are highly anxious before exams because their anxiety will increase your own.

bulletPlan rewards. Schedule some fun activity both during exams and when they are all finished because they will provide you with a break from studying and something to look forward to.

Schedule your time before exam weeks. Prepare a list of when your exams are and how much time you plan to spend studying for each of them.

bulletStart early. Schedule your study time to avoid last minute cramming.

bulletAllow large blocks of time for studying. Study for at least 1 hour at a time.

bulletAllow for short periods of review. Use random moments of free time to review concepts that you have studied.

bulletVary what you study. Don’t study two similar courses right after each other because you will become bored with the topic.

bulletSchedule breaks. Respect your concentration span. Take time between subjects to relax for a few minutes before you start a new subject.

bulletStay with your routine. Try as much as possible to stick to your normal routine. Avoid staying up all night to study.

The night before your exams you should:

bulletSpend your last hours calmly reviewing what you’ve learned. Don’t try to learn new material then.

bulletAvoid staying up all night. The less sleep you get the less clearly you will be able to think during the exam.

bulletDon’t get involved in activities that might interfere with what you’ve learned. Review and relax.

Lastly, but most importantly TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.
