How to Talk to Your Professors
It is very important for students to get
to know their professors. Despite any horror stories you have heard or
how unapproachable they may seem, it will be very helpful for you to
get to know them. The first visit will be easier if you follow these
simple steps.
 | Visit your instructor during
posted office hours or a scheduled appointment. This may seem a bit
obvious but if you try to catch your professor outside of these
opportunities may be difficult. It may also not provide them with
adequate time to consider your concerns. They have scheduled office
hours specifically to help students with problems or concerns, when
they have the time to focus on the student. You can find a list of
their office hours usually on your syllabus, on the course website,
on the professor's home page, and on the professor's office door.
|
 | Visit your instructor when you
have legitimate issues to discuss. Issues such as: |
Honestly not understanding why
you did poorly on a test, paper, or other assignment. Also if you
are having trouble understanding the material that is being
covered in class.
If you are considering pursuing a major in you professors’ area of
expertise and would like more information.
If you are considering going to graduate school in your
professors’ area of expertise and would like more information.
 | Prepare before you visit your
instructor. Plan what types of questions you’re going to ask. Take
any material that you are going to discuss with you.
|
 | Visit your instructor with an
open, friendly attitude. Professors really do enjoy talking to
students and having personal interactions. After all personal
interaction is part of why they chose to teach at a smaller
college. |
