Success Tips

Tips for Success at Monmouth College
 | Get to know the College
|
 | Familiarize yourself with the
campus. Locate the buildings where all of your classes are, the
library is, and where you plan to eat, if it is on campus.
|
 | Learn how to use the library! If
you didn’t learn how to on the first tour during orientation, ask a
librarian or an upper classmen to show you were things are and how
to use them.
|
 | Attend social events to get to
know what the college has to offer you outside of the classroom. |
Advising
 | Talk to your advisor about
concerns you may have and about possible majors, because your first
advisor is likely to not be from the department you choose to major
in. They can help you figure out who you need to talk to when
changing advisors, transferring outside credits, and what courses
you need to take to meet your general education requirements.
|
 | Once you have decided on a major
talk to your new advisor in that department about what courses you
need in order to receive your degree.
|
 | Use other students who have been
here a while for advice, they can be good sources of information
about potential majors and courses. |
Social Needs
 | Join student organizations that
you have an interest in. You will have a chance to make new friends. |
 | Talk to your resident assistant or
your head resident/hall director if you are having problems
adjusting to college life or roommate problems. |
 | Talk to your parents if you are
feeling homesick to get some social support. |
 | Don’t just sit in your room, get
to know people in your dorm, in your classes, and on your sports
teams. |
Academics
 | Keep track of deadlines to drop or
add courses and important meetings with your advisor or department.
Set priorities among your courses if you have to drop one. |
 | Make it a point to talk to people
in your courses. It will be helpful for forming study groups,
getting assignments and notes if you have to miss class and to make
new friends. |
 | Be sure to check the bulletin
boards in your department to find out when speakers and
presentations will be occurring and take advantage of them. |
 | Don’t get behind in your courses.
Professors may give quizzes over reading assignments or
comprehensive exams. |
 | Take advantage of review sessions
and subject tutors for help in understanding course materials. |
Professors
 | Make sure you know and understand
your professors’ grading systems. |
 | If you don’t understand an
assignment, contact your professor for clarification. Use a
professor’s office hours to get additional help or questions
answered. |
 | Don’t wait until after your first
exam to see how well you will do in the course. Talk to your
professors before the first exam to see how you need to do on the
exam and ask if they have any suggestions to help you study or
comprehend the material better. |
General Tips
 | Make backup copies of all of your
assignments in case the original gets lost. |
 | Ask for all important decisions in
writing or a copy of the document because faculty or staff members
may be there one semester and not the next. |
 | Be friendly to the secretaries.
They are wonderful sources of information and if they can’t answer
your questions they can direct you to someone who can. |
 | ALWAYS ask questions.
