Monmouth College students engage in a variety of co-curricular activities that are organized
informally by students who share a common interest or goal.
However, in some cases a group of students may seek to become recognized formally as
a Monmouth College Student Organization.
Starting a New Organization:
The College grants recognition only to
student groups:
-
Whose function meets a clear student need not
already met by a student organization,
-
Whose purpose and associations are consistent with the mission and the heritage of the College, and
-
Whose existence advances a sense of community
throughout the College.
If you are interested in
starting a new student organization begin by filling out the
application form, developing a
constitution,
and finding a faculty advisor. Print out

Musical Ensembles
Chorale
The Monmouth College Chorale is a
highly selective, auditioned, mixed choral ensemble that performs
regularly on and off campus. The Monmouth College Chorale serves as
the centerpiece for the annual “Christmas at Monmouth” concerts and
maintains an active and demanding rehearsal and performance
schedule. The Monmouth College Chorale is an ambassador to alumni,
prospective students and to the general public.
Chapel Choir
The Chapel Choir is a non-auditioned
mixed ensemble that rehearses twice a week and performs at campus
Chapel services every Wednesday at noon. The Chapel Choir is the
only ensemble at Monmouth College that is conducted solely by a
student conductor. The audition process for the Chapel Choir
conductor is highly selective and requires that students are music
majors and have studied conducting. It is intended to give students
podium time and an experience that will prepare students to conduct
a church choir.
The Sound of 5
The
Sound of 5 has a rich history and tradition at Monmouth College. The
group originated as a jazz/pop group with instrumentals under the
direction of Dr. Richard Griffiths.
After a break of about six years,
the group has been revived as an A Cappella style group that
specializes in jazz/pop music without any instrumental
accompaniment, just voices and vocal percussion. However, the group
will occasionally appear with the Monmouth College Jazz Band.
Though there are more than five
singers in the ensemble, we have maintained the traditional name for
history’s sake. The ensemble is made up of students that sing in the
Monmouth College Chorale and they rehearse on their own time, as
this ensemble is not a registered course.
Men's Glee Club
The Monmouth Men’s Glee Club is the oldest extant choral ensemble at
Monmouth College. The Monmouth Men’s Glee Club was one of the first
touring college choirs in the country, having started its touring
tradition in the late 1800’s. In the last year the size of this
ensemble has tripled, demonstrating its popularity among students
and the campus community.
The ensemble is open to any male singers without audition and
specializes in music for men’s choir in the “Glee Club” tradition
that is popular at so many Eastern and Midwestern colleges and
universities. The Monmouth Men’s Glee Club appears regularly with
the Monmouth Women’s Glee Club for major concerts on campus.
Women's Glee Club
The Monmouth Women’s Glee Club is a
non-auditioned choir that is open to all women who want to sing. It
is a new ensemble on campus that is rapidly gaining in popularity
among student singers at Monmouth College. The ensemble enjoys
performing a variety of music from contemporary pop music to
traditional choral music. The Monmouth Women’s Glee Club appears
regularly with the Monmouth Men’s Glee Club for major concerts on
campus.
Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble is a group of approximately forty musicians which plays important
concert band repertory. It presents several concerts on campus during the school year.
Graduating seniors are often featured as soloists and guest conductors. Membership is open
to all students by audition.
Jazz Band
The Jazz Band is an ensemble which performs both traditional big-band literature and
small-combo styles, including original compositions by the members. Basic training in
improvisational skills is included, and all members get to play solos.
String
Ensemble
The string ensemble
provides an opportunity for students who play violin, viola,
violoncello, or string bass to continue their musical activities at
Monmouth College. The group participates in
several on-campus concert programs every year.
Percussion Ensemble
The Monmouth College Percussion Ensemble performs a wide-ranging repertoire of percussion music. From ragtime novelties to the most cutting-edge contemporary works, the ensemble explores the diverse tonal world available to the percussion family of instruments. The group performs two major concerts each year and is open to students of all majors.
The Fighting Scots Marching Band The Fighting Scots
Marching Band is open to
all students at Monmouth College. The band
performs at all home football games
and marches in local parades such as the Monmouth College Homecoming
Parade and the Warren County
Prime Beef Festival Parade.
While providing all music for the
games, the 65 member band adds energy and
enthusiasm under the direction of student Drum Majors. The Fighting
Scots Marching Band also
performs standard pep band faire along with numerous cheers,
chants and surprises during each game.
